Wellington Polo: Late Carlos Gracida’s Team wins USPA Sieber Memorial Tournament
Catamount won the USPA 12-goal Sieber Memorial Tournament with a narrow 12-11 overtime victory over Palm Beach Equine at Grand Champions Polo Club on Saturday, March 02.
Carlos Gracida was due to play the Wellington polo final but his sudden tragic passing saw his two sons, Carlitos and Mariano, join the team in his honor alongside patron Scott Devon and Chris Nevins against Palm Beach Equine’s Agustin Arellano, Juan Bollini, Luis Escobar and Scott Swerdlin.
Carlitos Gracida led the score with four goals, Devon and Nevins added each three goals and Mariano Gracida contributed two goals for the total of 12 goals. While for Palm Beach Equine, Escobar made six goals and Arellano added four to the lose.
Carlitos Gracida was named Most Valuable Player while Mariano Gracida’s Maharaja, took the Best Playing Pony
While in the Subsidiary Final, Goose Creek (Lucas Arellano, Maureen Brennan, Cote Zeggers, Tano Vial) defeated Pony Express (Benjie Daniels, Bob Daniels, Tomás Goti and Julian de Luzarreta) 11-8. Cote Zegers was named MVP and Tomás Goti’s Marselleso took the BPP award.
The day ended with beautiful and touching “Celebration of Life” for Carlos Gracida at International Polo Club Wellington polo.
The tournament is named in honor of polo player Rob Sieber who died in a polo accident almost three decades ago at Oak Brook, IL.
