Lechuza Caracas Beats Villa del Lago in the Wellington Polo Season’s First Final
Lechuza Caracas finally took home the championship as they won the Herbie Pennell Cup 2014 against Villa del Lago with the final scores of 14-11 at the International Polo Club Palm Beach during a rescheduled match on January 6, 2014.
The game was very tight with scores 5-all by half-time. But as the fourth chukker went by, Villa del Lago’s Pablo Pieres converted two penalty shots to close out the chukker with a narrow lead score of 8-7.
Mariano Gracida of the Lechuza Caracas tied the score as he made the first goal in the first 17 seconds of the fifth period. The chukker passed by with each team responding goal for goal locking up the score at 10 -10. A last second goal by Nicolás Espain allowed Lechuza Caracas to ride off the field with a 11-10 lead.
As the final chukker began, Villa del Lago tried to take control the ball but Pablo MacDonough, a 10-goal player of Lechuza Caracas, finished the finals for 14-11 victory.
Lechuza Caracas 14 scores were accounted for MacDonough scoring eight goals, Espain scored four times and Mariano Gracida had two goals. While Villa del Lago’s 11 scores were made by Pieres, Augustine Obregon, Iñaki Laprida, and Jim Zenni scoring seven, two, one and one goals respectively.
MacDonough, a recent winner of the Argentina’s Triple Crown, was named MVP, while Pieres’s Pugliese took Best Playing Pony honors.
Last year at the 2013 Herbie Pennell Cup, Lechuza Caracas won the Subsidiary Trophy.
