Wellington Equestrian Jumping and Dressage Festivals – The Season is On

We are in full season now here in Wellington Florida home of the equestrian capital of the world. The FTI Consulting Winter Equestrian Festival – WEF and the Adequan Global Dressage Festival are under way right now and will be hosting many events until March 30.

Mark Bellissim CEO of the Palm Beach International Equestrian Center has made a lot of improvements to the grounds and surrounding areas to really have Wellington be deserving of their place on the equestrian map.

Both of these festivals are world class events. Dressage will get even more well known here in Wellington. The infrastructure is in place now and future improvements are in the works.

WEF has a new sponsor – ROLEX. There need not be any more said about this company. Rolex is very supportive of the equestrian community and being able to say that Rolex is your sponsor carries with it a lot of klout. They in turn will attract other sponsors to the show.

The Global Dressage Festival is going to be filling an U.S void- there will not be a better built dressage facility than here in Wellington.

The winner of Jumping Chantilly Grand Prix in France will be invited to compete in Wellington WEF in 2015. Wellington is America’s winter horse capital and the equestrian capital of the world. “Like young flavorfully crafted wine, Wellington rose from the fertile South Florida soil to bear fruit, ripen, and ferment into a full-bodied experience unlike any other.” Sue Weakley from Equestrian quarterly wrote.

Wellington Equestrian properties

The winter edition of the Equestrian Quarterly magazine 2013 is celebrating Wellington as the premier destination for winter equestrians.

Charles Oliver Wellington bought 18,000 acres back in 1951. Back when he bought this property it was nothing but a soggy swamp. The state of Florida passed legislation to drain off the water in this area. The entire area became fertile farmland. There were over 2000 acres of Strawberry Fields here back in those days. In the early 1950s less than 100 people lived here and called Wellington their home. The property that Charles Oliver Wellington purchased became known as “Flying Cow Ranch”.  A lot of people ask us what that means. Well it’s actually the owner’s initials and the same icon that he used for his airplanes. There is still a road here called, “Flying Cow Ranch”.

Charles Oliver Wellington died in 1959. Mr. Wellington’s son started to develop a little bit of the land in order to pay for the estate taxes.

It took a long time for this area to develop but equestrians started to discover this area.  Soon it became known as America’s winter home for the equestrian elite. Each year polo players, equestrian jumpers, dressage and other horse enthusiasts came to this area for the winter season.

Wellington Polo Properties

Polo is the sport of Kings and soon Wellington became known for Polo.  This was the high society of all things equestrian as women adorned with their big hats came from up North to Palm Beach to watch polo games. Celebrities and royalty from all over the world have been in Wellington at one time or another to watch or participate in a polo game.

The weather is fabulous in Wellington in the winter. Every weekend is filled with excitement in Wellington where you can watch shows jumping, dressage, and polo games every single weekend. There is not another place around that you can watch all of these sports at the same time during the same weekend.

Wellington Classic Dressage Challenge I – First Competition of Wellington Winter Equestrian Season

The Wellington Classic Dressage is having their first competition for the 2012 Challenge Series this weekend at the Jim Brandon Equestrian Center at 7500 Forest Hill Blvd.

The competition is being held this Saturday and Sunday, January 7th and 8th from 8:30 a.m to 5:30 p.m.

The best part about this dressage event is that it is FREE for spectators. If you have not ever seen dressage you need to go and get a glimpse of this high class equestrian style event. The discipline of rider and horse is a true art combined with sport.

What is dressage? It is like horse dancing. You may have seen this on TV but in person it is quite the event. I love being a part of the dressage events. We get to witness some amazing talent from around the world as rider and horse show off their athletic ability that is combined with grace and class.

Don’t worry about lunch either. Just bring some cash with you to taste the many offering from about 8 to 10 specialty food trucks. These trucks are not like the ones on the side of the roads. We are talking some gourmet offerings that will have you back again for seconds.

Hope to see you there!
