Alegria Wins 110th USPA 26-goal Maserati U.S. Open Polo Championships
The Alegria team (Julian Mannix, Hilario Ulloa, Mariano Aguerre and Clemente Zavaleta) defeated Valente (Bob Jornayvaz, Santi Torres, Sapo Caset and Juan Martin Nero), 11-10, in OT during the 110th USPA 26-goal Maserati U.S. Open Polo Championships. The event was held on Sunday at the International Polo Club Palm Beach in Wellington, Florida.
During the first minutes of the game, Alegria managed to get the first lead by 1-0, but Santi Torres answered with two consecutive goals. They were followed by another goal by Juan Martin Nero. The first chukker went in favor of the Valiente.
Alegria avenged in the second chukker, their defense locked out Valiente and goals were made by Hilario Ulloa and Julian Mannix. This made the score even by 3-3.
Valiente demonstrated their defensive expertise in the third as they blanked Alegria while adding a goal in a three foot penalty shot (Penalty 2, from the spot of the infraction) from Caset. After three chukkers of play, Valiente left the field at the end of the first half with a narrow 4-3 edge.
During the fourth period, Ulloa and Caset exchanged penalty shots. Ulloa scored a goal with a 30-yard penalty conversion, tying the score to 4-4. Caset responded with a 40-yard penalty shot making it to 5-4. The rest of the chukker belonged to Alegria as Ulloa scored on three successive 30-yard penalty shots leading the score to 7-5.
Both teams played a neck-to-neck battle for the rest of the game, ending regulation play even at 10-10. In Overtime play, Alegria was awarded another 40-yard penalty shot. Ulloa made the winning shot and the game ended with a very narrow 11-10 edge.
The MVP for this year is Clemente Zavaleta while Hillario Ulloa’s horse ‘Mia’ received the Best Playing Pony award.
