We have humble horse living quarters to horse farms with complete state of the art sand rings and turnout arenas,  paddocks, barns with stalls and grooms quarters. 

There is never a dull moment in our equestrian area in Wellington where each Sunday you can catch a Polo match and then during the week enjoy the hunter/jumper events or stay focused on a dressage competition during our winter equestrian season. We are home to WEF Winter Equestrian Festival and Polo Championships each year. The Palm Beach International Equestrian Center is home to many horse events.

Wellington Polo News: Lechuza Caracas Moves On The Next Round of 2014 Maserati US Open Championship

Lechuza Caracas won against Crab Orchard in their first match at the 2014 Maserati US Open Championship with a 11-9 win. Lechuza Caracas (Victor Vargas, Nico Pieres, Juan Martin Nero and Nico Espain) and Crab Orchard (Peke Gonzalez, Magoo Laprida, Facundo Pieres and Paco de Narvaez) played last Friday.

At the end of the first chukker Lechuza Caracas rode off the field with the 2-0 advantage.

In the second chukker, Facundo Pieres scored a couple of goals for Crab Orchard in less than a minute for a 2-2 tie. Nero responded with two goals of his own, 4-2. Facundo Pieres scored the final goal of the chukker to cut the Lechuza Caracas lead to a single goal, 4-3.

In the first minute of the third chukker, Crab orchard took their first lead of the game, 5-4. Nico Pieres closed out the first half with three consecutive goals (two on penalty shots) to give back the lead of two goals to Lechuza Caracas, 7-5.

In the second half, Facundo Pieres converted a pair of shots for goals, 7-7. Nero took the lead back for Lechuza Caracas, scoring with just 42 seconds on the clock. Lechuza Caracas continued to lead, 8-7.

In the fifth, the Crab Orchard defense stepped it up, shutting out the Lechuza Caracas attack. Gonzalez tied it, 8-8, and Facundo Pieres gave the lead back to Crab Orchard with his sixth goal of the game, 9-7.

At the final chukker, a desperate Lechuza Caracas foursome took control of the game in the sixth. Nero tied it at 9-9 and followed it up with another goal from the field that gave the lead back to Lechuza Caracas, 10-9. With Crab Orchard pressing to score the tying goal, Nico Pieres finished the game with his sixth goal of the match for the 11-9 victory.

Nico Pieres scored six times for Lechuza Caracas and Nero added five goals for the win. Facundo Pieres scored six goals, De Narvaez added two and Gonzalez added one in a losing effort.

The next match in the Maserati US Open play will be between Valiente (Bob Jornayvaz, Santi Torres, Sapo Caset and Adolfo Cambiaso) and Orchard Hill (Steve Van Andel, Santiago Chavanne, Pablo MacDonough and Matias MacDonough) on Saturday afternoon at the International Polo Club Palm Beach.

Wellington Polo News: Goose Creek Wins 16-Goal Santa Rita Abierto

Goose Creek (Maureen Brennan, Tommy Collingwood, Cote Zegers, Tano Vial) beat Casablanca (Grant Ganzi, Juancito Bollini, Fred Mannix and Nic Roldan) in the 16-goal Santa Rita Abierto final that took place at Grand Champions Polo Club in Wellington, Florida, 14-12.

In the first half, Goose Creek took the lead of 5-4 with four goals credited to Brennan.

In the fourth chukker, Casablanca scored for a 8-7 advantage, that would be their first and only lead of the whole match.  

Goose Creek re-took the lead in the fifth chukker, 11-10.

In the early sixth chukker, Brennan and her boys were leading 12-10 but Casablanca put enough pressure and managed to get a 12-12 tie. A determined Goose Creek foursome battled back and took the lead once again, courtesy of Zegers first, followed by a penalty conversion by Vial, who secured the title for Goose Creek, 14-12.

The MVP Pro was awarded to Tano Vial while the MVP Amateur was given to Maureen Brennan, both from Goose Creek. Tommy Collingwood’s polo pony Image took the BPP honors.

The tournament is named after the Melissa Ganzi’s Ocala Santa Rita farm.  Santa Rita Farm which was named after Melissa’s deceased grandmother. This is where the Ganzi family breeds and trains polo ponies.

Wellington Polo News: The 110th Maserati U.S. Open Kicks Off

The third and most prestigious tournament of U.S. polo’s Triple Crown, the 110th Maserati U.S. Open, kicked off Sunday, March 30, at the International Polo Club Palm Beach.

Eight teams up to 26 goal will go in search of the coveted trophy: Alegria, Audi, Coca-Cola, Crab Orchard, Flight Options, Lechuza Caracas, Orchard Hill and Valiente.

Crab Orchard defeated Orchard Hill on the opening day at IPC with 12-9 scores. The tournament continues as Valiente and Lechuza Caracas meet on March 31, Alegria vs. Audi and Flight Options vs. Coca-Cola both rescheduled for Tuesday.

The championship final is due on Easter Sunday, April 20.

The last 2013 U.S. Open, Zacara defended its title with a come-from-behind 16-13 victory over Valiente, breaking Valiente’s 11-game win streak. Since George Rawling’s Crab Orchard won back-to-back titles (2007-2008), it was the first time a team successfully defended its U.S. Open title. Mariano Aguerre was named Most Valuable Player.

Only two women have won the U.S. Open: Sunny Hale in 2000 with Outback and Gillian Johnston in 2002 with Coca-Cola.

The U.S. Open Polo Championship, the most prestigious tournament in the United States, dates back to 1904. It was first played at Meadowbrook Polo Club in Old Westbury, N.Y. and has been part of the Wellington polo history. It has been played at the International Polo Club Palm Beach in Wellington, Florida since 2004. It is one of three major polo tournaments worldwide along with the British and Argentine Opens

Second Title For Valiente: Piaget USPA Gold Cup

Valiente (Bob Jornayvaz, Santi Torres, Sapo Caset and Adolfo Cambiaso) won their second title, the 2014 USPA Piaget Gold Cup, over Alegria (Julian Mannix, Clemente Zavaleta, Mariano Aguerre and Hilario Ulloa) at the International Polo Club on Sunday afternoon.

Caset made the opening and the final goal of the first chukker while Alegria’s Zavaleta scored once, 2-1.

Zavaleta tied it up to 2-2 on the second chukker but Caset managed to gave the lead back to Valiente, ending the chukker with 3-2.

The first half has ended with Valiente taking a 7-3 advantage over Alegria.

Alegria tried to cut the lead into 7-5 as Aguerre scored two goals in the opening minutes of the fourth chukker. Valiente responded in kind, 9-5.

In the fifth chukker, the two teams ended with a tie score of 9-9.

In the final chukker, another penalty goal from Caset was all they needed as to hold on to the 11-10 victory.

Caset was named MVP while Bob Jornayvaz’s Pipi took the BPP honors.

Meanwhile, Crab Orchard (Kerstie Allen, Facundo Pieres, Magoo Laprida and Inaki Laprida) took the Butler Handicap Subsidiary against Coca-Cola (Gillian Johnston, Sebastian Merlos, Julio Arellano and Facundo Obregon) with Inaki Laprida as the BPP and Facundo Pieres’ Norma named as the BPP.

Wellington Polo Piaget USPA Gold Cup Championship: Valiente VS. Alegria

Valiente (Bob Jornayvaz, Santi Torres, Sapo Caset and Adolfo Cambiaso) meets Alegria (Julian Mannix, Clemente Zavaleta, Mariano Aguerre and Hilario Ulloa) after winning on Wednesday, March 19, semifinals of 2014 USPA Piaget Gold Cup.

In the first semifinal, Valiente registered a decisive win 14-10 over Audi (Marc Ganzi, Gonzalito Pieres, Rodrigo Andrade and Gonzalo Del Tour).

Torres of Valiente got the opening goal followed by a goal from teammate Caset, 2-0. Audi’s 10-goaler Pieres finally got his team back with a goal from the field. Teammate Andrade made the tying goal, 2-2. The first chukker ended with Cambiaso and Torres adding another goal to Valiente, 4-2.

In the second chukker, Valiente continued to lead as the chukker ended with 6-4 scores. And the first half ended with Valiente still on the lead, 7-6.

Valiente left Audi scoreless in the fourth chukker with goals from Caset and Cambiaso the only scores of the chukker, 9-6.

Caset scored twice with Santos and Cambiaso adding single goals in the fifth chukker while Pieres and Ganzi scoring each for Audi, 13-8.

In the last chukker, Audi couldn’t catch up anymore as the final horn sounded for the 14-10 Valiente victory.

Caset led the score with seven goals, Cambiaso added four and Torres scored three for the Valiente’s victory. While Andrade and Pieres each scored four and Ganzi and Del Tour each added one goal for the losing effort. 

As for the second semifinal match, Algeria defeated Lechuza Caracas (Victor Vargas, Nico Pieres, Juan Martin Nero and Nico Espain) in an overtime, 8-7.

The first chukker went scoreless and the second chukker ended with only 2-0 scores, Lechuza Caracas in the lead. The first half ended with Lechuza Caracas still on the lead, 4-2.

The two teams traded goals in the fourth chukker, 5-3. In the fifth chukker, Lechuza Caracas continued to lead by two goals, 7-5.

But Alegria turned up the heat in the sixth chukker. Mannix and Ulloa managed to tie the scores into 7-7. Both teams struggled to earn the go-ahead goal but the final horn sounded it was all even.

Alegria managed to score a come-from-behind overtime win over Lechuza Caracas, 8-7.

Ulloa led all scoring with five goals, including the game winner, and Mannix and Zavaleta add two and one goals respectively. Pieres scored fourth times, Nero twice and Vargas once in the loss.

NBA Ambassador Coaches Team USPA in Wellington

NBA Ambassador Bob Delaney, together with the offices in NY and Sarasota, FL gave an outstanding and overwhelming lecture at the Wellington Polo Museum in Lake Worth, FL on Friday morning, March 14, 2014.

The lecture was about on the values of creating a strongly bonded polo team, that wins on and off the field. As an ambassador, he shared his experiences as an NBA Umpire Adviser. He has officiated over 1,700 regular season NBA Games, 200+ playoff games and 10 finals, including All Star games in China and Japan

He was with Team USPA members Belinda Brody, Matt Baker, Brandon Van Loon, Augustine Arellano as well as Charlie Muldoon, Maggie Mitchell, Bobby Puetz, Elizabeth Hedley and Kris Bowman.

For continuing success and growth for the professional athlete, professional umpire, as well as for the leaders of professionals and support staff in a sport such as Wellington polo, he offered inspirational suggestions.

The objective was to help build the next generation of effective, informed leaders, on and off the polo field.
